With its three main functions, the new Heleln Canal Lock is a true multifunctional structure: in addition to ensuring coastal protection through the two large lifting gates of the outer and middle head, which are closed in the event of a storm surge, it also serves as a sluice structure for draining the low-lying inland areas. In addition, boats and watercraft up to a length of 33.50 m can be sluiced between the Hadelner Canal and the Elbe independently of the tide.
