In the Himmelreich at house no. 29 above the shop windows, you can see two witches' brooms in the brickwork (also to be seen on other houses in the old town.) They protect against "thunder, disaster, witches and evil spirits, thunderstorms and storms and other misfortune". The round openings at the top of the façade were intended to attract owls. These rid the old town of rats and mice.
Many pious sayings and symbolic statements on the façades of houses invite you to read aloud as you walk around the town, here for example:
Suffer and avoid.
In all things let God alone
be the beginning and the end:
With God the beginning is good:
Before the end, thank God.
