The house is the birthplace of the still current translation of the "Odyssey" by the poet Johann Heinrich Voß (1751-1826).
The former record house, in which Johann Heinrich Voß lived with his family from 1778 to 1782, was opened to the public in 1999 after extensive restoration work. An exhibition shows Johann Heinrich Voß as a poet, editor and translator, controversial publicist, friend and private person. An audio and multimedia station provide an insight into the life and work of Voß.
The German poet and translator Johann Heinrich Voß was born on February 20, 1751. He spent a short period of his eventful life as a teacher in Otterndorf.
During these years, he translated Homer's "Odyssey" in a memorable manner and vivid language, enabling generations of German readers to engage with the work.
The Johann Heinrich Voß Museum has been carefully modernized in recent years. An audio station invites visitors to linger longer and listen more closely to the translation of the Odyssey, for example.
The Voss House team is looking forward to your visit.
Free admission with the guest card.
