The five-storey building with the baroque brick façade in the heart of Otterndorf is one of the most important architectural monuments on the Lower Elbe and stands for the former prosperity and economic power of the Hadeln region. The house bears the symbol of the crane, which is considered a sign of diligence and commercial vigilance, on the roof and above the door.
The oldest parts of the building can be seen in the front building, which dates back to the late 16th century. The brick façade, based on the Hamburg model, is from the Baroque period, while the massive granary building is from the 18th century.
Today, the Kranichhaus houses part of the archives of the district of Cuxhaven and, above all, the Museum of the Old Land of Hadeln, which displays small-town and rural living culture from around 1550 to 1850.
In Otterndorf, for example, there were almost fifty goldsmith workshops during this period, the outstanding results of which are exhibited in the Kranichhaus.
