In Hooksiel, you will find a freely accessible historic mudder boat on display on the dyke on the south side of the Old Harbour. It was in use in Hooksiel from 1837 until the 1950s. In earlier times, there was a mudder boat in front of every outer harbor of a dyke. It cleaned the approach channel of silt. To do this, the boat went aground at low tide and large wings were folded out on both sides. The force of the water, which was dammed up behind the sluice gate, pushed the boat towards the sea. In doing so, it cleared the access channel to the harbor.
