The Osten-Hemmoor floating ferry, one of the last eight floating ferries in the world, is the towering landmark of Osteland. A filigree giant from the imperial era, it was marvelled at as the "eighth wonder of the world" when it opened in 1909. Until 1974, the suspension ferry did its duty in all weathers and was only replaced by the Ostebrücke bridge built in the course of the B 495.
Today, the national monument Schwebefähre is available for tourist demonstration trips in the summer months.
A non-profit association takes care of the operation of this unique floating ferry and the organisation of cultural events.
For more information, a visit to the Fährmuseum, the FährStuv, directly at the Schwebefähre is recommended. On the Hemmoor side is the Schwebefähren Info Mile. There, all eight still existing floating ferries in Spain (Bilbao), France (Rochefort), England (Middlesbrough and Warrington), Wales (Newport), Argentina (Buenos Aires) and Germany (Rendburg and Osten) are displayed. These ferries are organised in the World Floating Ferry Association and have a common goal: to preserve all floating ferries.
