The floating bog in Sehestedt is the only bog in the world that is located outside the dyke.
During large storm or hurricane tides, the approximately 3 meter thick layer of bog begins to float. With every major flood, pieces of peat break off and disappear into the North Sea, which is why the moor regularly becomes smaller. The area is still around 10 hectares. In the foreseeable future, the floating bog will no longer exist.
Many visitors appreciate this special place and are fascinated by this ecologically highly interesting habitat where salt and freshwater life meet.
Nature lovers and enthusiastic birdwatchers will appreciate the boardwalk with the great view from the observation hut and enjoy the remaining floating bog. To preserve the moor for as long as possible, it is not permitted to walk on the moor area away from the boardwalk.
