St. Petri zu Osten - a brick-encased pearl of North German rococo
The church was built in 1745-1748 as a brick building in the late Baroque style on the banks of the Oste according to plans by the Hamburg city architect Johann Leonhard Prey. The rococo-style interior, built between 1749 and 1754, was also created by Prey and has been preserved unchanged. With the size of a town church, it bears witness to the prosperity of the farmers and merchants in the Ostemarsch. Around the monumental pulpit altar, the interior is surrounded by a band of 26 trowels, as the partitioned cabinets in the lower nave are called. The altar, organ prospectus and carvings by David Benjamin Opitz and the stucco work by the Martini family from Ticino combine to create a unique ambience. Prey, who worked as a planner and co-builder of the Hamburg Michel from 1751, uniquely implemented the idea of light and lightness of the French Rococo in Osten.
The organ was built between 1751 and 1754 by Jakob Albrecht. In 1890, the Peternell brothers installed a late-romantic organ behind the existing façade.
