Church
The church in Otterndorf is the largest in the Hadeln region.
St. Severi's Church is commonly referred to as a peasant cathedral and, with its impressive, predominantly baroque interior, is the largest church in the Hadeln region.

The church owes its name to Bishop Severus of Ravenna, the patron saint of wool weavers, who died in 348 AD. The original Otterndorf church, which was successively extended, was donated by wool merchants in the 13th century.

The bronze baptismal font from the mid-14th century and the Marian bell (with an image of Severus of Ravenna), which was created in 1455 by the important Bremen ore founder Ghert Klinghe, have been preserved from the church's pre-Reformation origins.

St. Severi Church was given its current external form prior to the installation of the Dietrich-Christoph-Gloger organ from 1741, the largest baroque organ in the Elbe-Weser organ landscape and organ of the year 2020. Due to the so-called "Otterndorf Organ Controversy" (1665), in which the arguments of Superintendent Hector Mithobius prevailed against the organ-critical Rostock professor Großgebauer, Otterndorf is considered the birthplace of Lutheran organ culture.

Good to know

Openings

The church is open Monday to Saturday from 10.30-12.30 and 15.00-17.00 during the church guard hours.

As the Glog organ is currently being reinstalled and tuned, it must be quiet in the church, so conversations must be held outside the church.

The service times can be found in the local press or on the website https://kirche-otterndorf.de/ .
